FIFA have fined West Ham United £71,000 after their Senegal striker Diafra Sakho did not go to the African Cup of Nations claiming a back injury, but played in the FA Cup at Bristol City.

A FIFA statement issued on Wednesday confirmed the news, reprimanding both club and player for the affair as well as imposing the 100,000 CHF (£71,000) fine on the Hammers.
West Ham had believed they would be vindicated in the dispute which began when the Premier League club said he could not travel to the tournament in Equatorial Guinea due to injury.
Senegal then made an official complaint to football's world governing body about him playing in the FA Cup fourth round for West Ham when he came off the bench to score in their 1-0 win at Bristol City last weekend. His national team, who went out of the tournament last week, were angry that their officials were unable to examine Sakho themselves because West Ham said he was not fit enough to fly.
West Ham denied any wrongdoing, and co-owner David Sullivan had insisted that "any FIFA hearing will vindicate us, we have done nothing untoward."

SERIKALI SASA KUNUSURU MACHINGA

GHANA FANS SEEK REFUGE ON FIELD AS RAIN DOWN IN APPALLING SCENES

Ghana supporters dodged missiles as they spilled onto the field for their own safety in astonishing scenes during the African Cup of Nations semi-final with Equatorial Guinea.

Ghanasupporters dodged missiles as they spilled onto the field out of fears for their own safety during a tempestuous African Cup of Nations semi-final with Equatorial Guinea.
With barely 10 minutes remaining, play was halted after Ghana fans sought refuge on the pitch as objects rained down on them in some of the most appalling sights ever witnessed at a major international tournament.
Equatorial Guinea’s players marched over to their fans in an attempt to halt the madness – but it merely prompted the next wave of cans and bottles to be launched at the opposition fans.
And in a shocking twist, it was reported that fans of the host nation left the stadium to prepare an ambush for the Ghana support – with a helicopter deployed in an attempt to track down the guiltiest perpetrators.
The Ghana fans were ushered down the stadium tunnel, police fired tear gas into the stands, but – incredibly – the match officials were keen to complete the match, despite the Black Stars boasting a near unassailable 3-0 lead.
Equatorial Guinea fans had started throwing objects onto the field after their side went behind to a controversial 42nd minute penalty.
Ghana players had to be protected by riot police using plastic shields as they left the field at the end of the first half and the second period was delayed by two minutes as home fans aimed plastic bottles and tin cans at Ghana's bench.
The Confederation of African Football used the public address system to threaten to call off the game if the crowd at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo did not stop pelting Ghana's players.
Later there were also appeals for calm from Equatorial Guinea captain Emilio Nsue and the country's sports minister.
The second half was halted briefly, first, as a linesman had to flee infield to escape more missiles from the angry crowd and again eight minutes from time when Ghana supporters sought sanctuary on the field after coming under attack from locals.
The players remained on the field with the referee as officials struggled to bring order. The delay went on for 34 minutes before play was resumed.
It was a shameful end to a horribly ill-tempered affair that saw Ghana progress to the final against Ivory Coast and stay on course for a first AFCON title since 1982 – but no one will be talking about that match-up for a good while yet.

Equatorial Guinea have been fined £65,000 after their fans sparked a riot in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Ghana on Thursday.

Policemen get ready to evacuate a tribune during the 2015 African Cup of Nations semi-final football match between Equatorial Guinea and Ghana (AFP)
Ghana were closing in on a 3-0 win over hosts Equatorial Guinea at the Estadio de Malabo on Thursday evening, when celebrating away fans were forced to flee the stands after being pelted with bottles.
The host nation will be able to play their third-place play-off match as usual, but have been warned that any further trouble will mean that they will have to play their next match behind closed doors.
In addition to the $100,000 fine, Equatorial Guinea will also have to pay all medical bills for anybody hurt at the match.
The Ghana Football Association's Twitter feed described the scene as being "like a war zone" as a police helicopter hovered over the ground, while the head of the Ghanaian FA feared supporters would be killed in the violence that marred the second semi-final of the tournament.
Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi told the BBC World Service on Friday: "We're lucky we haven't lost any lives, though people have sustained injuries arising from objects thrown at them."
A horrifying array of items were picked off the pitch, with a BBC reporter taking a picture of what appeared to be a small rock, half a dining plate, and a jagged shard of mirror.
Nyantakyi told BBC World Service: "African football has grown beyond this level and in the 21st century we expect to see more decency in the behaviour of fans.
"A high-profile game of this nature should have attracted police, intelligence officers and military.
"I couldn't have counted 50 policemen at the stadium, the rest were from Angola, who were not familiar with the terrain, so they didn't know how to handle the situation. So the Ghanaian fans were left at the mercy of these violent fans."
The match was suspended for around half an hour as Ghana supporters took refuge behind one of the goals, out of range of most missiles. It eventually resumed and Ghana completed their victory, setting up a final against Ivory Coast on Sunday.
Ghana furious after semi-final crowd trouble
There were reports of tear gas being fired into the stands in a bid to control the Equatorial Guinea fans, while home players also attempted to quell the trouble by appealing for their supporters to calm down.
A tweet from the Ghana FA's official account during the match said: "Police helicopter hovers above the pitch with the #Ghana fans in real danger. It's now like a war zone. #AFCON2015".
Jonathan Mensah, who played in the match for Ghana, labelled the violent scenes "unacceptable" for any environment.
He wrote on his personal website on Friday: "It was really an ugly sight. It has been a great tournament so far without any major problems.
"It's unacceptable for such things to occur anywhere in the world let alone in a football stadium. I hope all fans are safe and my thoughts are with those who have sustained any injuries."
Equatorial Guinea stepped in to host the tournament at the 11th hour after Morocco pulled out due to fears regarding the Ebola epidemic.
Equatorial Guinea face a third-place play-off against DR Congo in the same stadium on Saturday, with Ghana and Ivory Coast contesting the final in Bata on Sunday.

12 AFRICAN COUNTRIES THAT RANK HIGHEST FOR GENDER EQUALITY

Gender equality is often pinpointed as a key issue in economic development of emerging economies. The World Economic Forum releases an annual Global Gender Gap Index to rank countries on their progress with regard to achieving gender parity in health, education, political engagement, and economic empowerment. The following are 12 African countries that rank highest for gender equality in the 2014 Global Gender Gap Index.
Numbers reflect countries’ gender equality score. The highest possible score is 1.00 (equality) and the lowest possible score is 0.00 (inequality). Countries’ worldwide rankings out of 142 countries studied, are also listed in parentheses.

12. Botswana – 0.7129 (No 51 worldwide)

In recent years, Botswana has made strides in gender equality. It has ratified and become a supporting member of a number of treaties, including the Beijing Declaration platform for action, Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and more. Botswana has seen women elevated to positions previously unobtainable, such as the head of the country’s legislature, the head of the Central Bank, attorney general, and ombudsman.

11. Cape Verde – 0.7133 (No. 50 worldwide)

Cape Verde passed the Gender-Based Violence Law in 2011 to increase the opportunities for redress for victims, and has improved the capacity of law enforcement officials to respond sensitively and promptly to gender violence. The country is also considered proactive in establishing development programs targeted at empowering rural and enterprising women, and enjoys strong participation of women in government at all levels.

10. Tanzania – 0.7182 (No 47 worldwide)

In the past decade, Tanzania has made vast strides in gender equality. For instance, girls’ primary school attendance increased from 60 percent in 2000-2001 to over 83 percent in 2010-2011. Women occupy more than a third of Parliamentary seats, and 47 percent of non-agricultural household enterprises are owned by operated by women. Women still struggle to achieve wages on par with men in the workforce. Articles 12 and 13 of the Tanzanian Constitution guarantee “equality between men and women and supports their full participation in social, economic and political life.”

9. Madagascar – 0.7214 (No. 41 worldwide)

While Madagascar struggles to achieve gender parity in many regards, particularly in education, the country has received aid from international organizations such as UNICEF. The children’s fund aid organization created the Fast Track Initiative to ensure Madagascar’s education system continued to function during political turmoil by providing payment to teachers and securing other technical assistance resources. Additionally, UNESCO launched a program to begin teaching gender equality in Madagascar universities, including teacher training courses and workshops for local women on preventing gender-based violence and increasing political participation.

8. Namibia – 0.7219 (No. 40 worldwide)

Namibia’s work on promoting gender equality has been progressing each year, and the country claims to have reached three of its seven targets — gender parity for secondary education, literacy rates for 15 to 24 year olds, and pre-primary education. Namibia is still working to establish parity for wage employment in the non-agricultural sector, primary education, tertiary education, and seats in Parliament. The Namibian Constitution explicitly forbids discrimination based on sex, and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare has been active in its efforts since it was established.

7. Lesotho – 0.7255 (No. 38 worldwide)

The Millennium Challenge Account-Lesotho (MCA-Lesotho) has been extremely active in the country to initiate programs that promote gender equality. This includes building awareness of the Legal Capacity of Married Person’s Act of 2006 — a law that gives women more rights than before in business. But even more influential has been the impact of men from Lesotho historically seeking work in bordering South African mines, leaving women to step up in a variety of roles. Although the majority of men have returned, the country remains more female-focused. One in five government ministers are female and there’s a strong culture of learning for women. Literacy rates among women actually exceed those of men – 95 percent compared to 83 percent.

6. Kenya – 0.7258 (No. 37 worldwide)

The new Kenyan Constitution, passed in 2010, gave many new opportunities to women, increasing access to education, land ownership, and employment. The Constitution has been lauded for its strides in the areas of women’s access to institutions, justice, and the ability to control and use property. Laws have been well implemented since their passage. Organizations such as the Kenya Association of Women Business Owners and the Africa Businesswomen’s Network have been hard at work educating women about their new rights. Traditional or customary laws that contradict the new legislation have historically been held responsible for cementing gender inequality in Kenya. These are now considered invalid.

5. Malawi – 0.7281 (No. 34 worldwide)

Kamuzu Banda, the first president of Malawi following its independence, wanted education for all, and has been well embedded into Malawi’s society. The National Gender Policy has been quite successful in raising awareness of food and nutrition matters, women’s legal rights, and economic empowerment opportunities. Malawi has also worked to provide easy access to reproductive health services and family planning for all, especially those in rural areas.

4. Mozambique – 0.7370 (No. 27 worldwide)

Mozambique’s favorable position on the Gender Gap Index comes from its progress in women’s economic participation and political empowerment. There’s a large percentage of women in parliament — 39 percent in 2014, according to World Bank. However, Mozambique falls short in the areas of health and education, with a larger gap in education gender equity than many of its neighbors (including some ranked lower on this list, such as Botswana, Lesotho, and Namibia). Mozambique also lacks the infrastructure for accessible health services for all.

3. South Africa – 0.7527 (No. 18 worldwide)

South Africa’s constitution is one of the most progressive in the world, and contains strong guarantees for equality and full rights for all its citizens. Some feel that the country’s position as a powerhouse in sub-Saharan Africa means it should be doing more to ensure gender parity. In fact South Africa has passed some of the strongest legislation on the continent, including the Employment Equity Act, the Domestic Violence Act, the Sexual Offences Act, and legislation on marriage and women’s health issues. South Africa also ranks eighth worldwide for gender equality in political engagement. Nearly half the seats in Parliament (42 percent to 45 percent) have been held by women since 2009.

2. Burundi – 0.7565 (No. 17 worldwide)

Post-conflict Burundi has been making strides in gender equality, and is named on many international treaties that uphold equal rights for men and women. The country’s constitution requires at least 30-percent representation of women in parliament and government. Burundi initiated a Poverty Reduction Strategy in 2012 to ensure women received the bulk of resources allocated. The constitution is clear on its position on gender discrimination, stating, “All citizens are equal before the law which ensures their equal protection. Nobody may be discriminated against because of their origin, race, ethnicity, sex, color, language, social status, religious, philosophical or political beliefs or due to a physical or mental disability, infection with HIV/AIDS or any incurable disease.”

1. Rwanda – 0.7854 (No. 7 worldwide)

In 2014, Rwanda was included for the first time on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index. It had been previously left off the list. Much of this has to do with the country’s response to the 1994 genocide in 1994 that resulted in a much more powerful position for women in politics. Following the genocide, the constitution was changed to mandate that at least 30 percent of governmental senior positions were held by women. Today, 64 percent of the Rwandan parliament is female. Usta Kaitesi, a teacher of gender and law at Rwanda University’s Faculty of Law, said, “Many women were left as widows because of the genocide. Others had to work hard in the place of their jailed husbands for allegedly taking part in the genocide. So even young girls got that mentality to perform genuinely to access good jobs, and good jobs mean going to school first.” The high proportion of women in government means pro-women legislation is consistently a priority. Rwanda has seen a reduction in poverty in recent years, which President Paul Kagame largely credits to women’s empowerment initiatives

ETHIOPIA’S POPULATION PROJECTED TO HIT 90 MILLION THIS YEAR

Ethiopia’s population is projected to hit 90 million this year, the country’s state Central Statistical Agency (CSA) said yesterday.

The announcement was made in a press conference by CSA Acting Deputy Director General of Population and Vital Statistics Asalifew Aberra in Addis Ababa on Friday.
In July 2014, the population of Ethiopia stood at around 88 million, making the country the second most populous in Africa.
According to Aberra, the Ethiopian population size comes second only to Nigeria which has a population of over 164 million.
“There is no way Ethiopia’s population can overtake that of Nigeria,” Aberra said, refuting a report by a local newspaper that claimed that Ethiopia’s population would overtake that of Nigeria.
Ethiopia has been implementing a population policy over the past couple of decades through which family planning was expanded to most of the rural areas in the country, he said.
The average fertility rate that hit 7.7 children per mother a few decades ago has now come down to 4.1 children, he said.
“This shows that whereas Ethiopia’s population will continue to grow in the future, the rate of growth would come to be less and less,” he added.

17 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT RUNNER CASTER SEMENYA

$

Middle-distance runner and world champion Caster Semenya, 23, made history in 2009 when she drastically improved her time for the 800-meter race, prompting rumors about her gender. Born on Jan. 7, 1991 in Limpopo, South Africa, Semenya has many awards to her name due to her extreme speed and athleticism. These include a silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics and a gold and silver medal in the 2009 and 2011 World Championships. Semenya, 23, has tried to stay out of the media spotlight. She was the subject of a genetic testing scandal and earlier this year, was rumored to be engaged to another female athlete. Semenya lives in South Africa where she balances studies in sports science at the University of Pretoria with her athletic career.
Here are 17 things you didn’t know about runner Caster Semenya.

1. Her Father Wanted A Boy

Back in 2009 when Semenya became the focus of media attention, most people focused on the results of genetic tests. Few people, however, took the time to think about how she was actually raised. SportingLife talked to her father, Jacob Semenya, and found out that although he had wanted a boy, he was proud of his daughter and happy at her birth, saying he supported her throughout her life.

2. It Was Hard To Train Early On

The Moletije Athletics Club got international attention when Semenya became famousas it had  represented her in her early start. Semenya grew up in a poor, rural town and despite her rise to fame, her home club still faces hardship. Late in 2009 when Semenya was already famous, club runners back home were still running on a dirt road that they couldn’t use during the rainy season. The club members see her as a national hero, idol, and someone to look up to.

3. The 800 Meters Isn’t Her Favorite

Most people assume that Semenya’s favorite race is the 800 meters as this is what she typically runs and how she has won most of her medals. She told the Guardian, however, that she actually prefers the 1500-meter race. It gives her the ability to “sit back and relax” during the race, planning her time, she said. She also is worried about getting injured from running the 800-meter race.

4. No Romance With Violet Raseboya, But Friendship

Caster Semenya has denied rumors that she and Violet Ledile Raseboya, another female runner, are engaged. She insists they are best friends. In fact, she wears a bracelet with the letters “V4C” that Violet gave her.

5. Has Chatted With Kelly Holmes

When Kelly Holmes, another Olympic runner, was in Cape Town, Semenya had the chance to talk with her. Holmes gave her inspiration and advice to keep running as she would have plenty of opportunities in the future.

6. Her Idol Is Maria Mutola

Although Caster Semenya has met Kelly Holmes, her idol is Maria Mutola, a three-time 800-meter world champion. Semenya relates to her because they both love soccer, with Mutola transitioning to the sport after a running career. Semenya got her start with the sport when she was young.

7. Getting Ready To Run

Even when other runners were avoiding Semenya in 2009, she didn’t get nervous before races. Instead, she would just listen to music, relax, and get in the mood to run. She likes all types of music including hip hop, gospel, and especially the South African gospel singer Oleseng Shuping, who died in 2010.

8. She Loves South African Food

Despite having traveled the world, Caster Semenya’s favorite food is still one of the South African classics, mielie pap — a traditional porridge similar to grits made from cornmeal and a staple food in Southern Africa. When she’s in her own country, she eats some variation of it most days.

9. Gender Testing Had Been On A Hiatus

Before Semenya became a news story for gender testing, there had been a temporary stop in the practice. Gender testing for the Olympics started back in the 1960s but about a decade previously, the International Olympic Committee decided not to test anymore due to the lack of ways to do so. After the controversy over Semenya, however, it had to reexamine this decision. It was announced after her victory at the 2009 World Championships that she had undergone gender testing. She couldn’t participate in international competition until July 6, 2010 when the International Association of Athletics Federations cleared her to return to competition.

10. She Has Taken Hormone Treatments

After the International Association of Athletics Federation ruled that women need to be within a certain range of testosterone levels, rumors have abounded that Semenya is one of the athletes who takes hormones to stay within this range. This has made her appear more feminine with rounder features.

11. She sued the IAAF

Semenya sued the International Association of Athletics Federation for $120 million for everything they put her through with the gender testing. The IAAF only handed over $18 million because, allegedly, that was all they could afford.

 12. She trains with Oscar Pistorius

Semenya trains at the University of Pretoria, which is the same place famous amputee Oscar Pistorius trains. The two run on the same track but when Semenya arrived at the university, she was not yet a world class runner.

13. She was honored with a great nomination

In 2012 Semenya was nominated for Best Sporting Lady of the year in the Africa Top Sports Awards. Not the mildest of awards, the program also nominates the “worsts” of several categories so it can be a toss up if an athlete ends up in a running.

14. She outran her superiors

In 2009, Semenya beat South Africa’s senior record, as a junior running, by lowering her personal best from 2:00.58 to 1:56.72. At that time this was one of the best records in the world.

15. Her physical stats

The runner stands at 5’10” and weighs 160 pounds, according to her official profile on the 2012 Olympics site.

16. She has asked for financial help

Semenya once started a text message campaign asking her country for money,to help fund her running. Her message read “I would … like to make a request to South Africans to support me on various platforms that my team has put together…and my promise to the nation is that through excellence and resilience I will strive to live up to the reputation of being known as the Golden Girl.”

17. She’s struggled to find sponsors

Semenya’s gender test issues have made it hard for her to find official sponsors. Some close to her have said the runner is basically broke, but she did find a company to sell t-shirts and other such apparel to raise money for her.

HARRY KANE DOUBLE GIVES TOTTENHAM DERBY HONOURS OVER ARSENAL

Spurs beat Arsenal 2-1 after coming from behind, with Harry Kane’s double including a dramatic late winner.

Spurs dominated much of the game in terms of territory and possession in the first half, but Ozil made the breakthrough when Danny Welbeck’s good work on the right set up Olivier Giroud to slice a shot into Ozil’s pass. Ozil impressively side-footed a volley past Hugo Lloris.
Spurs kept up the pressure, with Christian Eriksen and Ryan Mason bringing smart stops from David Ospina, but Arsenal kept Spurs at bay.
In the second half, Arsenal started brighter but Spurs gradually reasserted their control of the game. Kane’s equaliser came when he stabbed in unmarked at the back post after Ospina flapped at a corner.
His winner came with just minutes remaining, heading in at the back post as Arsenal failed to keep their defensive discipline.

KEY EVENTS
5’ - ERIKSEN SHOT - Monreal's cross scoots across the box and luckily for Spurs, Rose collects and clear. Spurs attack down the the other end, working the ball to Kane on the left. He comes onto his right foot and curls a shot just inside the corner that Ospina tips away.
11 - GOAL! Spurs 0-1 Arsenal. Ozil scores - Welbeck gets of Rose, putting the ball one side of him and running around the other. He pulls the ball back for Giroud, who slices his shot into the path of Ozil, and he brilliantly flicks a shot past Lloris. Ozil was perhaps a fraction offside.
22’ - ROSE SHOT - Rose has yet another strike on goal, this time in the area. He drags a low shot wide.
30’ - OSPINA SAVE - Mason lets fly from 30 yards, a rising shot going to the top corner. and Ospina leaps across to save.
50’ - LLORIS SAVE - The ball bounces off Bentaleb into the path of Cazorla. He tries to force a curling shot into the net, but Lloris dives left to concede a corner.
56’ - GOAL! Spurs 1-1 Arsenal. Kane scores - a corner comes in from the right, glanced to the back post which Ospina flaps away, but only as far as Kane, who stabs in at the back post.
60’ - DEMBELE SHOT - Dembele fires a shot at goal that rolls just in front of Kane at the back post, but Ospina pushes away.
61’ - WELBECK SHOT - Welbeck curls a shot towards the far corner, but it's not far enough from Lloris to prevent a diving save.
64’ - BENTALEB CHANCE - Ospina dives to his left to tip away Bentaleb's shot from outside the box, but Kane's rebound is saved by him again, and he's offside.
86’ - GOAL! Spurs 2-1 Arsenal. Kane scores - Arsenal have done an Arsenal. A deep cross to the back post is met by a towering Kane jump, and he sends his effort back across the goal and beats Ospina easily.

KEY STATS
Harry Kane has 14 Premier League goals and 22 goals overall this season.
Spurs have lost just one of their last seven Premier League home games against north London rivals Arsenal (W4 D2 L1).
Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in their last 33 Premier League matches against the Gunners.
Arsenal have not managed back to back away wins in the Premier League this season and have only managed it once since January 2014.

TALKING POINT
Arsenal are back to their old ways. After Ozil scored the opener, there were cries taunting the idea that Ozil doesn’t appear in big games. Well, this wasn’t an especially big game compared to other games Arsenal and Ozil have played in even in this season alone. After his goal he faded dramatically, and Arsenal retreated into their shell as they had done in periods against Manchester City. This time though, they were let down by defending by set pieces and crosses as they have been for much of the last decade, and Harry Kane was not as profligate as recent opponents have been.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Harry Kane (Spurs): Danny Welbeck went to Arsenal to play as a striker. Reasonably enough, he finds himself back on the wings as he is nowhere near clinical enough. Compare that to Kane. Ungainly but consistently able to find the net, he demonstrated the instincts and anticipation that Welbeck still lacks.

Liga champions Atletico Madrid thrashed league leaders and city rivals Real Madrid 4-0 in Los Blancos' heaviest defeat since losing 5-0 to Barcelona in 2010.

Tiago and Saul Niguez gave the hosts a 2-0 half-time advantage at the Vicente Calderon in a five-minute spell.
Niguez's goal was particularly impressive as he put away a spectacular bicycle kick.
Atletico danger men Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic turned the big result into a massive hammering in the second period.
Though Real still lead the table with 54 points, Atletico are now third with 50 - the same as second-placed Barcelona, who can go one point behind Real if they defeat Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
